4 -June 21, 2006 More Good News For Kuna! by Zeke Corder mmm Kuna Idelba News I got a real nice letter from the city this week asking for information about Dr. Nelson's Overpass and the history of that project. I am writing a response now. It's good that your city is keeping that issue open and reusing the old data. It's an important project that was ready for application before. It is an honor to be asked, too. Please let your city know what you think. Call 922.5546 or add a note to your utility bill. Most of you know that I am a planner by profession, and most of my clients are "cities and counties. One of them asked for research how lot size affects house value. It turns out that it doesn't; it is the lot's VALUE that determines the house value. I was surprised. Lot value is generally determined by the developer's original purchase price but fees, amenities (parks, open space, lighting, setback sidewalks, etc), taxes and demand also play part. Does this mean that Kuna can affect the new home values byj requiring these various amenities? Tell me what you think. By the time you read this, I should be back from another work trip "Down Under, Mate." I missed a couple of editions of the K-M News but I'll try to write about any uniqueness of Australian planning next time. It's winter there now. Last August, I got snowed on in Melbourne. BRRR! Finally, I am sorry that I still can't report on the city council meetings. I have to work. - Dave Szplett, Kuna Looking at Lincoln on Display at Ada Library The exhibit, Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era, will be on display at Ada Community li- brary on Victory Road July 15-27, 2006. We can go into a gun store, pick out a gun, put down our money, fill out the NICS instant check form, show ID, the dealer calls NICS, you pay for the gun and walk out of the store with it. Even people from states contiguous to Idaho can purchase long guns (ri- fles and shotguns) in Idaho. There are getting to be fewer and fewer places, even in the United States, where that is still possible. Of course, it isn't always that easy. Sometimes, the FBI has some question. It may be someone in the U.S. has a similar, or even identi- cal name, or your name may have been flagged as an alias some criminal has used, or any of a dozen other reasons. In that case, the FBI may de- lay the instant check. If that happens, the FBI has up to three, full business days to verify that your name match- es your SSN, your address, or whatever. If they don't respond to the dealer within those three business days you can pick up your gun and go home. If you make the effort to obtain an Idaho Concealed Weapons License, things become even easier. You show your driver's license (or state ID card) and your CWL and the instant check is complete. You fill out the form, the dealer enters the info from your licenses and you go home with your gun, or guns. Many states require some sort of waiting period be- fore you take any gun home. Regardless of your instant check status; regardless of whether you have a CWL for that state, there is a wait- ing period. The reason being that the legislature of that state has decided that even if you are a U.S. citizen, sub- ject to the U.S. Constitution, that you should be restricted Keep informed of community news and events! Because they can and the people of that state let them get away with it. Other states, name- ly California and some East Coast statesmake it nearly impossible to ob- tain any firearm. In some cases, they pick pictures of guns out of books, and de- cide no one in that state is allowed to purchase or own those guns. I often hear Californians who say, "We have so many crazies in California, they have to do that." I submit that the reason there are so many "crazies" in Cali- fornia is because honest, law-abiding citizens are re- stricted from or disallowed gun ownership. This makes it a fertile, no-holds-barred environment for "crazies." They know honest people can't own guns, but illegal guns are always available. To them honest people are just potential victims who are not allowed to defend themselves. The point being that in Idaho we still believe in the U.S. Constitution and the individual rights of honest people. Thank goodness! However, it is the responsi- bility of every individual in the state of Idaho to ensure that it stays that way. Stay informed, watch what the state legislature does, and make sure that the people from other areas coming into Idaho don't take away our basic rights as people and citizens of the U.S. Jim and Dorothy Frisch to Celebrate 80t" Birthdays Please join us for an Open House Saturday, June 24, 2006 1 - 5 p.m. Spurwing Country Club ~ 80th Birthday Celebration ~ Jim (5/1/1926) and Dorothy (6/29/1926) Frisch No gifts please.
